STEM Scholarship Opportunities for Minority Students

If you're a student from a minority group looking for scholarships to help you pursue your STEM studies, look no further! Check out these great awards.

I’m often asked about trends in the world of private outside scholarships, meaning those scholarships not specifically attached to a specific college or university. One particular trend I’ve seen in scholarships from private companies, organizations, individuals, and foundations over the past decade has been an increase in opportunities for minority students who are pursuing science, technology, engineering, and math careers, also known as STEM fields. As industries strive for more diversity in their workforce at every level, companies are investing in the future of their industries by supporting promising minority students through scholarships to reduce financial obstacles on the way to STEM-related degrees. Here are just a few of these scholarship opportunities to consider.

Gates Millennium Scholars Program

Founded in 1999 by Bill and Melinda Gates, the Gates Millennium Scholars Program is a $1.6 billion program established to assist Black American, Asian Pacific Islander, Hispanic American, Native American, and Inuit Alaskan students pursuing bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in Computer Science, Education, Engineering, Library Science, Mathematics, and Public Health & Science. GMS scholarships cover unmet need and self-help aid, and awards are renewable for students who maintain satisfactory academic progress.

Generation Google Scholarship

The Generation Google Scholarship is another example of opportunity for a diverse array of students who are pursuing STEM-related careers. Undergraduate and graduate students who identify as Black/African American, Latinx/Hispanic, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, or Native American can apply to receive up to $10,000 if they’re pursuing a Computer Science degree or related field.

CollegeXpress has provided me with tips that were for college students, but as a high school junior, they were still very useful. Not only that, it also gave me an idea of what to expect when it comes to going to college or already being in college. I want to say thank you to CollegeXpress, and I hope you continue the wonderful tips until I hopefully get into college and throughout my college journey.

CollegeXpress has helped me find scholarships for the colleges I applied to. It was very hard for me to find scholarships in the beginning that I was qualified for. My teachers recommended this website to find some, and not only did I find some scholarships but I also got to look into some schools I hadn’t heard of before. I was very happy to have discovered this website, especially with the coronavirus spreading all over as I can’t really go visit many colleges.

I'm a senior in high school, and CollegeXpress has helped me in so many ways this year in trying to navigate the process of deciding and committing to a university. The COVID-19 Student Resource Center has helped me many times with the most up-to-date and accurate information, along with financial aid and student life [advice]. During these uncertain times, CollegeXpress has been a great recourse to relieve the stress as a senior. Along with the COVID-19 Student Resource Center, I'm constantly using the extremely helpful tools off the site to aid me during this stressful process. Tools like the lists and rankings of universities have been the most beneficial. I've also used the site to receive expert advice on topics like financial aid. Finally, CollegeXpress has helped me easily apply for several scholarships. I'm thankful to be given the chance to win a scholarship to lessen the burden of my college debt.

My high school counselor introduced me to CollegeXpress freshman year. It has made such a difference in high school, and I plan to continue relying on it in college. CollegeXpress is my go-to because it addresses each aspect of being a student. There are the articles you’d expect regarding college applications and financial aid, but you will also find advice on things like de-stressing and maintaining relationships while balancing a heavy course load. CollegeXpress will also keep you updated on current scholarships through e-mails each Saturday. (They don’t harass you with any product promotion like so many other sites do.) CollegeXpress is a lot like an older sibling who has already conquered the challenges you are facing. Now, they are reaching out a helpful hand. I say take it.

My favorite feature of CollegeXpress is the scholarship search. As someone going out of state for college, I needed all the financial help I could get, and CollegeXpress helped me easily find scholarships I could apply for to help fund my education.
